Engine Oxygen Sensor Overview

Why Is This Sensor Important

The engine oxygen sensor plays a crucial role in the vehicle's emission and fuel control systems. It measures the oxygen level in the exhaust gases, sending this data to the engine control unit (ECU). This helps the ECU adjust the air-to-fuel ratio for maximum efficiency, lower emissions, and better engine performance.

How Does This Sensor Work

Mounted in the exhaust system, this sensor detects the oxygen content before and after the catalytic converter. It produces a voltage based on the exhaust mixture, telling the ECU if the mix is too rich or lean. The ECU then fine-tunes fuel injection and timing, ensuring smooth combustion and optimal power output.

What Happens If It Fails

If this sensor fails, your engine may run poorly, use more fuel, or fail emission tests. The check engine light often appears. Delaying replacement can cause damage to the catalytic converter, increase pollution, and lower your vehicle's performance.
