Center Differential Assembly for Subaru AWD
This drivetrain unit is the heart of Subaru symmetrical AWD ⚙️. It is needed to split engine torque between the front and rear axles so the car can grip and track straight on dry roads, rain, or snow.
How it works
Inside the gearbox, the center differential allows a controlled speed difference between front and rear wheels during turning. It balances torque and helps prevent driveline wind-up. Under load, its internal gears and coupling mechanism manage torque transfer to the axle with better traction, keeping the car stable and predictable.
If it’s worn or broken
A failing unit can cause binding in tight turns, shuddering, clunking, or vibration at speed. You may notice uneven traction, delayed AWD response, or a burning gear-oil smell. If ignored, it can damage transmission bearings, gears, and axles—turning a repair into a full gearbox rebuild 🛠️.
Why replace it
Replacing restores smooth cornering, correct torque split, and protects the rest of the drivetrain for long-term reliability.
