Rocker/Valve Cover Gasket Seal for Subaru Engines
This high-temp gasket closes the joint between the cam cover and the cylinder head, keeping engine oil in and dirt out ️. A fresh seal protects ignition coils and spark plug tubes, reduces odors, and keeps the engine bay clean. It’s a must-have maintenance part on aging boxer engines for stable oil pressure and tidy ventilation.
Why it’s needed
Heat cycles, vibration, and oil exposure flatten and harden old rubber. Once the material loses elasticity, seeping starts at the perimeter and around plug wells, spreading oil onto exhaust parts and wiring.
How it works
A molded elastomer ring sits in the cover groove. When cover bolts are torqued in a cross pattern, the gasket compresses evenly to create an oil-tight barrier. Small RTV dabs at cam cap corners (per service manual) complete the seal ✅.
When it fails ⚠️
- Burning oil smell or light smoke after drives
- Wet film along the head/cover seam
- Oil in plug wells, misfire, rough idle
- Gradual oil loss and messy undertray
Tech notes
Clean mating faces, remove old RTV, and degrease. Inspect cover for warpage and replace grommets if fitted. Torque to spec on a cool engine; after a heat cycle, check for seepage and retorque if required.
